Cambodia is a hidden gem when it comes to family travel destinations. Unlike its more touristy neighbors, Thailand and Vietnam, Cambodia offers a less crowded and more intimate experience. From stunning beaches and vibrant cities to rich history and thrilling adventures, this resilient country has so much to offer. Join us on a journey through Cambodia with kids as we share our top tips and suggested itinerary for an unforgettable family vacation.
Is Cambodia Safe for Traveling with Children?
The answer is a resounding yes! While there might be occasional reports of safety concerns, especially in the capital city of Phnom Penh, rest assured that Cambodia is generally safe to explore with your little ones. In fact, we found it to be completely trouble-free during our recent family trip. Bag-snatching and violent assaults are rare and unlikely to impact you, as long as you exercise the same caution you would in any other city. Just be aware of the healthcare system, which can be limited outside major cities. It’s always a good idea to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers emergencies. Lastly, remember to educate your children about the potential danger of landmines in rural areas and keep them close while exploring.
Getting Around Cambodia with Kids
Grab
One of the best ways to navigate a large city like Phnom Penh is by using the Grab app. This convenient ride-hailing service ensures fixed fares and hassle-free transportation. Simply book a driver, and you’ll have a reliable and comfortable way to get around. Make sure to register with the app before your first ride, and if possible, get a local SIM card to fully enjoy the service.
Bus and Minivan
For longer journeys within Cambodia, buses and minivans are excellent options. Giant Ibis is highly recommended for its high standard of service, especially for the international route between Siem Reap and Bangkok. Booking tickets online through reputable platforms like baolau can save you time and give you the freedom to choose your seats. Just keep in mind that some remote areas may not have access to these services.
Train
Taking the train in Cambodia is a unique and memorable experience. Although the routes are limited, the train ride from Phnom Penh to Battambang offers breathtaking views of the countryside. It’s worth considering if it aligns with your schedule. Trains operate daily, and the timetables can be found on the Baolau website. Compared to buses, trains are often cheaper and less crowded.
Visas and Immunizations for Cambodia
To ensure a smooth entry into Cambodia, it’s advisable to arrange your visa in advance. This will save you any potential hassle at the border. The e-visa system is straightforward, but be sure to double-check all the details, including your passport image and application photo. Print two copies of your e-visa to present at the border. If you haven’t obtained an e-visa, don’t worry. You can still get one at the border, but be prepared with cash (US dollars, Thai Baht, or Cambodian Riel) and a little patience. As for immunizations, consult the Fit for Travel NHS website for the most up-to-date information.
Money Matters in Cambodia
When it comes to currency, cash is king in Cambodia. You’ll get used to using both US dollars and Cambodian Riel interchangeably, often in the same transaction. Be mindful of the condition of US dollar bills, as minor tears or cuts may be rejected by others. Try to limit your use of dollars and keep them in good condition. ATMs are widely available and offer a choice between US dollars and Riel. However, if you choose US dollars, you’ll likely receive $100 bills, which may not be accepted in smaller establishments. If faced with torn notes, you can exchange them at a bank or money changer, albeit with a small fee.
