Whether you’re considering taking a bus or the train, we’ve got you covered with valuable tips and insights. So, let’s get started on this thrilling journey together!
Getting From Thailand To Cambodia (By Bus)
The easiest and most convenient way to travel from Thailand to Cambodia is by bus. Not only is it hassle-free, but it also allows you to enjoy the scenic beauty along the way. If you choose a bus service that takes you all the way to Siem Reap, you can skip some of the steps we’ll discuss later. However, we still recommend reading the border crossing parts, as we’ll provide you with valuable tips to avoid any potential visa scams.
When I crossed the border from Thailand to Cambodia, I opted for both the train and bus route, as it was the most cost-effective option at the time. However, it did make the journey a bit more complicated, as I had to catch a bus from the border crossing to Siem Reap. If you prefer a more straightforward journey, there’s a bus that can take you directly from Thailand to Siem Reap, making the process much simpler.
Getting From Thailand To Cambodia (From Bangkok By Train)
If you’re up for a unique and adventurous experience, you can also consider taking the train from Bangkok to Cambodia. Here are the steps to follow:
Wake Up Early
Depending on the location of your hostel, you might need to wake up a little earlier than usual. The good news is that in the morning, there’s usually less traffic, allowing you to reach the train station quickly. So, set your alarms and get ready for an exciting day ahead!
Take The Train To Aranyaprathet
The train from Bangkok to Aranyaprathet departs at 5:55 AM. If you manage to arrive early enough, you might avoid the long queues and secure a seat on the train. The ticket costs only 48 baht, making it an affordable option. Alternatively, you can also consider taking a bus from Bangkok to Siem Reap if you prefer a different mode of transportation.
Take The Tuktuk To The Thailand-Cambodia Border
Once you arrive at your destination, you’ll find a swarm of tuktuk drivers eager to offer you their services. Be prepared to negotiate with them and put on your friendly smile. Drinking a coffee beforehand might help you handle the situation better! If you’re traveling with a group, you can usually get a good price for the short tuktuk ride. We paid 20 baht each. Remember to inform the drivers that you already have your visa (even if it’s not true), as they might try to take you to the visa counter to rip you off. Stay vigilant and assertive to avoid unnecessary extra costs.
Thai Border Crossing
Once you’ve completed the tuktuk ride, it’s time to bid farewell to Thailand. Don’t forget to fill up the departure card, which should be inside your passport. This will expedite the process and make your exit smoother.
Cambodia Border Crossing
As you walk through the border, you might find this part a bit confusing. On your right, there will be a small office where you can obtain your visa on arrival. If you already have your visa, simply bypass this office and continue walking for approximately 300 meters until you reach the entry border.
Be prepared for the visa application process. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Your passport
- A picture (if you don’t have one, don’t worry, we’ll explain how to handle it)
- USD 30 (ensure the bills are crisp and undamaged)
- The address of your intended stay (your hostel details will suffice)
Now, let’s go through two possible scenarios:
Scenario A:
If you have your picture, they may request a bribe (typically around 100-200 baht). Place your USD 30 inside your passport along with the completed form and approach the counter. They might ask for the bribe, but if you’re patient, you can try again or create a scene (if you dare!). It’s a game of perseverance, so good luck!
Scenario B:
If you don’t have a picture with you, don’t worry. You can still obtain the visa by paying an additional USD 2. In this case, place USD 32 in your passport along with the form and proceed to the counter. They may ask for USD 35, but you can calmly explain that it’s supposed to be only USD 2 and that you don’t have any more money. Waiting a bit longer might be necessary, but if you’re traveling with others, they might accept faster. Remember, having pristine dollars is crucial, as they might refuse damaged or torn bills.
Get Your Stamp At The Cambodia Border
Congratulations! You’ve successfully obtained your visa and crossed the border into Cambodia. Now, proceed to the entry point where you’ll need to fill out another short form with the same information as before. Once completed, you’ll receive your official entry stamp, marking the start of your Cambodian adventure.
Take The Free Shuttle To The Bus Station
Continue on your journey by following the “Free Shuttle to the Bus Station” sign. Don’t worry; many helpful people will be around to guide you. Although they might ask for a tip later on, it’s entirely up to you whether or not to provide one.
Take The Bus To Siem Reap
Upon reaching the bus station, you’ll have multiple options to travel to Siem Reap. You can book directly on 12GO to ensure a smooth and seamless journey. Here are the three available options:
- Shared taxi: USD 48 for the entire taxi (recommended for a more personalized and time-saving experience)
- Bus: USD 9
- Minivan: USD 10 (you might have to wait until they gather a group of 10 people to share the van)
