These rice cooker grits are a creamy delicious and flavorful breakfast recipe made with corn meal, butter, water, and a drizzle of honey. Ready in 30 minutes, these simple grits are a hearty filling morning meal.
Making grits in the rice cooker couldn’t be easier. They’re buttery and tasty, and and the rice cooker does all the work. I love to serve these grits for breakfast with my favorite apple pie smoothie or pomegranate fruit salad.
If you’re looking for the simplest (read: laziest) breakfast that requires almost no work, this grits recipe is for you! Add all ingredients to your rice cooker, stir, push ‘Start’ and you have a fantastic breakfast in 30 minutes. I first had grits when I was in Nashville at the infamous Pancake Pantry, and have loved them ever since.
Grits are a great sweet or savory breakfast recipe, and a wonderful swap if you want to switch up your daily oatmeal or smoothie. You can add cheese if you like, but my favorite grits toppings are a simple pad of butter and honey.

What’s The Best Rice Cooker for Grits?
We have this fantastic rice cooker that has lasted us years and years, so I have to say I’ve been very happy with it! It gets weekly use, and is great for cooking rice, lentils, and quinoa in the rice cooker.
But I’d love to upgrade to this model eventually, it’s THE Cadillac of rice cookers. Our family has it, and it is one fantastic rice cooker. And it has a great feature which keeps the rice warm on the counter, so you can enjoy it all day.
What’s In These Plant Based Grits Recipe?
I cook with fresh produce from my garden and from Misfits Market- they sell fantastic fruit, vegetables, & pantry staples at a discounted price. We get Misfit boxes every other week and love picking out favorite produce for delivery. Get $10 off your first box here!
- Corn Meal – I love this fantastic corn meal for these grits. They’re organic and have the perfect texture – and the only ingredient is organic corn. No preservatives or additives.
- Water
- Pink Himalayan Sea Salt: I like to use a pink Himalayan Sea Salt in my kitchen, which has more natural minerals than plain processed table salt. It’s inexpensive, so I’d recommend this salt if you’re looking for an easy way to level up your spice pantry.
- Butter – I like to use unsalted butter to reduce the amount of sodium in my cooking.
- Honey: We use our own honey, straight out of the beehives for us! As beekeepers, we have plenty of raw honey so I try to use it in all my recipes instead of sugar. I’d recommend trying a local farmers market to find the best raw honey in your area. Or else, this raw organic honey online here is the next best thing.
How Do You Make Grits in the Rice Cooker?
- To the inner pot of the rice cooker, add the corn meal, water, half of the butter, and salt. Stir well.
- Set your Rice Cooker to ‘Quick Cook’ or set the timer ’30 Minutes’ – this will vary on your model, however the grits need 30 minutes to fully cook.
- Once grits have finished cooking, open the lid carefully, and stir the grits in the rice cooker. If there are any clumps, break them up with a fork and stir until creamy.
- Serve the grits with an extra pad of butter, and top with fresh honey (or cheese, or any of your favorite toppings). Enjoy!
