Wondering how to cook frozen diced hash browns in air fryer? I’m on it! Learn how to make frozen diced potatoes in the air fryer with this recipe. I made Ore Ida diced hash browns in an air fryer, but any brand of frozen breakfast potatoes can be used. You’ll love this delicious and easy way to get a serving of vegetables into your morning meal!
I have a lot of air fryer potato recipes on this site. I’ve got air fryer frozen hash browns (shredded ones), air fryer home fries, and air fryer potato skins. What I didn’t have (up until now) was air fryer frozen hash browns (diced).
It’s OK… I mean I don’t need to include every iteration of air fried potato recipes in the world here! However, I noticed that I get a lot of visitors looking for air fryer hash browns that are diced and frozen. So, here you go!
There don’t tend to be a lot of options in my local stores for frozen diced potatoes. Often, there’s only one brand available. It might be the Great Value brand frozen southern hash browns or their country style potatoes.
Or perhaps you’ve got a bag of Simply Potatoes diced potatoes. (These are a refrigerated product that will require less air fryer time than frozen cubed potatoes.)
Last time I shopped, it was the Ore-Ida Potatoes O’Brien. It’s a mix of frozen potatoes, onions, and bell peppers. If you can only find diced potatoes without other vegetables mixed in, that’s fine too.
Whatever brand you start with, you’ll end up with crispy air fryer potato cubes. So, let’s get to it, shall we?

⭐ Frozen Diced Hash Browns in Air Fryer Benefits
Why make frozen diced potatoes in an air fryer? Here are a few of the benefits of this air fryer vegetable recipe:
- Fast: This side dish is largely hands off and air fries in under 30 minutes. You can prep your main dish while the potatoes cook.
- Easy to Clean Up: A big advantage of air frying over using a skillet is that the air fryer is easier to clean. A non-stick air fryer basket or tray typically requires no scrubbing. Unfortunately, potatoes tend to stick to my cast-iron skillet (regardless of it being well-seasoned).
- Nutritious: Potatoes definitely count as a vegetable! You’re getting a large range of essential vitamins and minerals with potatoes, including vitamin C, vitamin B6, and potassium. Potatoes provide some fiber for gut health as well.
- Special diets: This simple air fryer recipe is naturally plant-based, vegan, dairy free, andgluten free. Check out the FAQs section for a tip on making low carb and keto diced hash brown “potatoes.”
- Versatile: Diced hash browns have a neutral flavor that works with a variety ofdifferent seasonings. I usually have hash browns for breakfast, but they can be served at lunch or dinner too.
- Delicious: Potatoes are one of the most popular veggies around because they are inexpensive and tasty. IMVHO, those are some great reasons to try this recipe!
🥘 Air Fryer Frozen Hash Browns (Diced) Ingredients
To make frozen diced hash browns in the air fryer, you need:
- Frozen potatoes (diced)
- Avocado oil (olive oil or another cooking oil works too)
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
- Cooking oil spray (non-aerosol)
- Ketchup or other toppings
It’s important for this recipe to look at the ingredients to see what you’re getting with your potatoes. If they contain oil, you may not need to add more. If they are seasoned, the salt and pepper is probably unnecessary.
I’m making Ore Ida frozen potatoes in the air fryer. The ingredients are potatoes, onions, green bell peppers, red bell peppers, dextrose, and sodium acid pyrophosphate.
Dextrose is an added sugar and sodium acid pyrophosphate is an additive that helps potatoes retain their color. There is no added salt and no added oil in these potatoes, which is why I’m using them in this recipe. Your frozen diced hash browns will crisp better with a little oil.
BTW, one of the reasons I like shredded hash browns better is that you can get bags that are just potatoes. All of the diced potato options I’ve seen (including “Simply Potatoes”) contain additives (and/or preservatives) such as sodium acid pyrophosphate. This puts them into the category of ultra-processed foods.
That said, I’d consider frozen cubed potatoes a much more nutritious food than some other ultra-processed options. The potatoes, additives or not, still count towards your vegetable intake. I can’t say the same of most cookies, cakes, and muffins.
🍽 Equipment
The only kitchen equipment needed for this recipe is an air fryer and a metal spatula. I use a 10-Quart Kalorik Digital Air Fryer Oven, a large air fryer with two trays. If you have a small air fryer basket, you may need to cook the potatoes in multiple batches.
You can air fry frozen cubed potatoes with your Ninja Foodi, Cosori, Philips, Pampered Chef Air Fryer, Actifry, Nuwave, Instant Vortex, Cuisinart, Power Air Fryer, or other air fryer. Keep in mind that air frying times may vary a bit between air fryer brands. I recommend keeping a close eye on the food the first time you try new air fryer recipes.
🔪 How to Make Frozen Diced Hash Browns in Air Fryer
How do you cook frozen potatoes O’Brien? Start by putting 12 ounces (340 grams) of frozen potatoes in a bowl. Frozen diced potatoes often come in bigger bags than this, but you want the air fryer air to circulate around the potatoes to crisp them up.
Stir the oil, salt, and pepper into the potatoes. Mist your air fryer trays or air fryer basket with cooking spray. Spread the potatoes out on the two trays in a single layer.
Put the trays into the air fryer. There is no need to preheat the air fryer for this recipe.
️⏲ Frozen Diced Hash Browns in Air Fryer Cooking Time and Temperature
How long to air fry frozen diced hash browns? What temp to cook frozen potatoes in air fryer? Air fry frozen diced potatoes for a total of 20-22 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200C).
Start by air frying the frozen diced potatoes for 12 minutes. Then flip the potatoes with a spatula and switch the position of the trays in the air fryer. Air fry for 8-10 minutes for crispy potatoes (or 5 more minutes if you prefer hash browns that are less crispy).
Don’t be afraid to adjust the cooking time depending on the size of your hash brown cubes. Potatoes cut into larger cubes will take longer to cook. Here is a cooking time and temperature chart for the different types of hash brown potatoes:
After cooking, your air fried diced potatoes are ready to serve. They’re great with ketchup or hot sauce!
🌡️ How to Reheat Diced Hash Browns
The great thing about frozen diced potatoes is that you can make only what you need, minimizing leftovers. If you do have leftovers, they can be stored in the fridge in a covered container for 3-4 days. Leftover cooked diced potatoes can be incorporated into breakfast burritos and air fryer hash brown casseroles.
To reheat home fries, air fry at 350F (175C) for 3-5 minutes (top rack for air fryer ovens). They can also be reheated in a microwave or on the stovetop with a little oil.

💭 Expert Tips from a Dietitian
This is a level 2 recipe (transition or weight maintenance). Potatoes are a starchy veggie that even picky eaters tend to enjoy. If you’ve been looking for a way to get more vegetables into breakfast, air fryer diced potatoes are an easy choice.
Hash browns are a side dish that only provide about 1 gram of protein. If you want to stay full until lunch, I’d definitely add more protein to your meal. Eggs, sausage, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and ham are some popular breakfast options for protein.
Another thing I would add are some low carb fruits or non-starchy veggies for more volume. I’ll often enjoy diced hash brown potatoes with an egg or two plus some strawberries. Raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries are some other great options.
Potatoes, corn, peas, and parsnips are some of the starchy veggies that are omitted from low carb diets. These veggies all also tend to be higher in calories than non-starchy veggies (like leafy greens). However, that doesn’t mean that everyone must stop eating foods like potatoes to lose weight.
I never completely gave up foods like potatoes, rice, bread, and pasta during my 70-lb weight loss journey. What I did do was dramatically lower my portions of these foods (plus added sugars and oils) while INCREASING my intake of non-starchy veggies, high-quality protein, and fruit. Basing my diet on filling low-calorie and high-volume foods was key to helping me maintain the calorie deficit needed for weight loss.
And if you want a higher energy meal? Pile on those potatoes! Serving sizes listed don’t necessarily reflect the right sized portion for your individual needs.
FAQs
Do you have to soak the potatoes for air fryer hash browns?
I do soak the potatoes when I use fresh potatoes for air fryer home fries. When you air fry frozen potatoes, there’s no need to soak them. Not having to soak the potatoes for 15-20 minutes is definitely a time saver!
Are frozen diced hash browns healthy?
What counts as “healthy” is going to vary by individual. It might be better to consider whether frozen diced hash browns are nutritious. Diced potatoes are a whole food source of a range of essential vitamins and minerals. Though frozen diced hash browns usually have preservatives and/or additives, I’d still primarily consider them a nutritious vegetable.
Can you make frozen diced hash browns in the oven?
Yes! To oven bake frozen diced hash browns, preheat the oven to 425F (218C). Mix the frozen hash browns with oil and (if desired) seasoning. Bake for 15-20 minutes on a metal baking sheet, flipping and stirring halfway through cooking time.
How to make diced hash browns keto?
Potatoes are not a good fit for very low carb and keto diets. For a keto diced hash brown alternative, try air fryer radishes! Radishes mellow out a lot when you cook them and they work well as a keto potato substitute.
