Preparing Glazed Ham in a Roaster is the ultimate way to cook your holiday ham! The sticky glaze adds an explosion of flavor and keeps the ham perfectly moist – no dry ham here! Plus, it leaves your oven free for all those mouthwatering side dishes. Join me as we uncover the secrets to creating a show-stopping glazed ham in a roaster.
The Ingredients You’ll Need 🍍
For this tantalizing recipe, you’ll need just two ingredients:
- Ham: Opt for spiral-cut hams for the easiest cooking and serving experience. However, any precooked ham will work. If you haven’t selected a ham yet, I’ll provide some tips on choosing a spiral sliced ham.
- Glaze: While pre-packaged sweet glaze packets are an option, I highly recommend our easy-to-make Pineapple Glaze for Ham. It only takes 10 minutes and boasts the perfect balance of pineapple and brown sugar, lending deep layers of flavor. We believe it’s even better than the famous Honey Baked Ham.
Note: You’ll also need a disposable large roasting pan for this recipe. I suggest using a half-size steam tray with dimensions of 13x11x2.5 inches.
Choosing the Perfect Spiral Sliced Ham
Spiral sliced hams come in various sizes and are typically pre-cooked with a touch of smokiness for that delectable flavor. The only downside to spiral hams is that if not warmed correctly, they can dry out. But fear not! We have you covered. To ensure a succulent ham, start with a quality product from the grocery store. I’ve always had great luck with Sam’s or Costco brand hams. Regardless of where you purchase it, look for a ham labeled “with natural juices” for the best flavor and consistency.
Please note that this cooking method is only suitable for precooked hams. Fresh or uncooked hams require a different approach.
How to Cook Ham in a Roaster 🐖
The secret to achieving a moist and flavorful ham is to cover it in a glorious glaze and cook it in a roaster pan. While some may suggest using a slow cooker, a spiral ham simply doesn’t fit well in one.
Start by ensuring that your roaster oven is large enough. I personally use a 20-quart Oster electric roaster oven, which works perfectly for this recipe. Any size of roaster oven will do, as long as it comfortably accommodates the ham without touching the sides.
Next, place the rack that comes with the roaster oven at the bottom of the roasting pan, and refrain from adding any liquid. Adding excessive liquid will turn the cooking process into braising instead of roasting.
Remove the spiral-cut ham from its packaging and pour out any juices that come with it. Then, spray the disposable pan with cooking spray and lay the ham, either on the flatter side or the “face end” down, in the bottom of the pan. In the provided image, we’ve placed the flatter side of the ham down, leaving the face exposed.
Brush the entire ham with half of the glaze, gently separating the slices to allow the glaze to seep in between. Be careful not to pull the pieces apart too far, as we want to maintain that lovely tight spiral ham appearance.
Set the disposable pan on the rack in the roaster and adjust the temperature to 250º. Cook the ham covered for 12-15 minutes per pound or until the ham reaches an internal temperature of 140-145 degrees. A digital meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the ham is the best way to check for doneness.
Once the ham is warmed through, pour off any accumulated juices. Now, brush the outer layer with the remaining glaze. Place the ham back in the roaster, cover it, turn off the heat, and let it rest for 20 minutes.
For an optional but highly recommended step, place the disposable pan on the middle rack of a conventional oven (be sure to support the bottom) and broil until the ham turns golden and develops a crispy exterior, reminiscent of a honey baked ham. Alternatively, if you have a food torch, you can carefully use it to caramelize the edges of the ham.
Prep Ahead Instructions ⏲
During the holiday season or on special occasions, the best practice is to prep ahead. When making a ham, you can prepare the glaze in advance and store it in the refrigerator for up to a week. Additionally, you can place the ham in a disposable roasting pan, ready to go, and refrigerate it overnight.
