If you’re captivated by the enchanting gaze of Goldendoodle dogs, you’ll surely be drawn to their mesmerizing eyelashes. These furry friends, like the adorable red Goldendoodle in the photo below, are famous for their long and luscious lashes that frame their soulful, loving eyes.
Unveiling the Mystery Behind Goldendoodle Eyelashes
Let’s delve into the world of Goldendoodle eyelashes and explore the answers to five frequently asked questions.
1. Do Dogs Have Eyelashes? What About Goldendoodles?
Similar to humans, dogs have eyelashes to protect their eyes from dust and debris. Whether they’re happily playing in the dirt, sniffing the grass, or simply lounging around, their eyelashes work tirelessly to shield their precious eyes. Interestingly, unlike humans, dogs only have upper eyelashes and lack lower lashes.
2. Are All Goldendoodles Blessed with Long Eyelashes?
Contrary to popular belief, not all Goldendoodles possess long eyelashes. Take my bestie Chloe, for instance. As she gracefully ages into a wise senior Goldendoodle, her face is adorned with sprinkles of white hair, yet her lashes remain short and sweet. In the photo below, you can see my medium Goldendoodle with her lovely, but not lengthy, lashes that elegantly outline her eyes. Fortunately, these short lashes require no special care like combing or trimming. However, it’s worth noting that Chloe boasts expressive eyebrows that amplify her charming face. She definitely knows how to give those irresistible “puppy dog eyes.”
3. The Secret Behind Long Eyelashes in Goldendoodles
Goldendoodles, being a crossbreed between Poodles and Golden Retrievers, often exhibit a mix of traits. This unpredictable combination extends to their eyelashes as well. While Chloe’s lashes are not lengthy, her friend Ruby, an F1 Goldendoodle, flaunts luxurious, cascading eyelashes. Just take a closer look at the photo below and witness how Ruby’s long lashes gracefully enhance her captivating brown eyes. Ruby’s mom cherishes these lashes, allowing them to grow up to three inches in length. While Ruby undergoes regular grooming, her eyelashes remain untouched.
So, where do these strikingly long lashes come from? A glimpse into the parent breeds of Goldendoodles sheds some light on this matter. Research suggests that the Poodle breed, known for its long hair, passes down the gift of lengthy lashes to the Goldendoodle family. Furthermore, as a general rule, dog breeds with long hair tend to possess equally long eyelashes.
4. Should You Trim Your Goldendoodle’s Eyelashes?
If your Goldendoodle boasts long, sweeping lashes, you might contemplate trimming them as part of your grooming routine. The answer to this question lies in the comfort of your furry companion and your personal preference. Professional groomers can offer guidance on your Goldendoodle’s luscious lashes. Unless these lashes obstruct your dog’s vision, trimming is not essential. Nevertheless, if a trim is needed, an experienced groomer will ensure a steady hand. Rest assured, if trimmed, your Goldendoodle’s eyelashes will grow back, just like the rest of their coat. Speaking of grooming, while Chloe’s lashes require no trimming, I find great joy in giving her a home spa treatment and trimming the hair around her face in an adorable Goldendoodle teddy bear cut. Taking a moment to inspect your dog’s eyes and lashes periodically is a wise safety measure — you’re probably already clearing away the morning “crusties” from the corners of your dog’s eyes, so why not do a quick visual check of their lashes too?
5. Ensuring the Health of Your Goldendoodle’s Eyelashes
During my research into dog eyelashes, I stumbled upon a condition you might not be familiar with: distichiasis. This common condition, where extra eyelashes grow in abnormal places, is more prevalent among Poodles. Interestingly, Golden Retrievers, another parent breed of the Goldendoodle, are also prone to this condition. (It’s worth noting that even the Miniature Poodle made this list.) Sadly, these abnormal lashes can irritate the eye, cause discomfort, and potentially even damage the cornea. Suspected to be a genetic condition, distichiasis should not be ignored. If you observe anything unusual about your Goldendoodle’s eyelashes, don’t hesitate to reach out to your vet. Rest assured, veterinarians are dedicated professionals who deeply care for our beloved dogs. Seeking their expert advice ensures the best possible care for your Doodle dog.
